"Hen of the Woods, Kumotake, The Dancing Butterfly Mushroom"
approx. 2,5 kg wood spawn
colonized with mycelium,
recommended to inoculate 1 outdoor bed
dimensions approx. 80 x 80 cm

Fruiting season: late summer / early autumn

Average nutrition value:
100 g dried fruiting bodies contains: 377 cal. | protein: 25,51 g | Fat: 3,83 g | carbohydrates: 60,17 g

Common known als medicinal mushroom, Maitake is also a delicious edible mushroom. It΄s a delicatcy in eastern Asian cuisine.

The fruiting bodies are brown to dark gray and become lighter in age. The are composed by overlapping caps arissing from steams. Each cap geht a diamter of approx. 2 to 10 cm. We suggest younger fruiting bodies for eating. Full-grown ones can be dried and used for preperation of tea. Grifol frondosa fruting bodies can reach a weight of 500 g an more under most convenient conditions.

It is very simple to apply a mushroom bed in your garden!
The perfect time is spring, when the temperatures are higher then 0 ° celsius during night. We provide ready colonised wood-chips substrate for inoculation of an outdoor bed. Just mix the spawn with suitable substrate (i.e. wood chips or straw) and keep it wet! It is also possible to use rye grain for outdoor inoculation, but grain attracts to rats, mouse an other animals who eat the whole mycelium.

Depending on the species the first fruiting bodies will appear a few month after inoculation of the substrate. According to species, mushrooms will fruit for a few years, till all nutrients of the wood have been consumed by the fungus. With little luck, the mushroom will settle permanently in your garden.

Growing conditions:
Spawn run: 21 - 24 °C
Primordia formation: 10 – 15 ° C
Fruiting: 13 – 16 ° C

For a perfect yield, the quality of the logs is essential! Please use hardwood (most suitable: oak, poplar, cottonwood, elm, willow, alder).

General information about Maitake:

The high amount of ergosterol, a provitamin which converts to vitamin D in the presence of sunlight, is remarkable. The mushroom's health-promoting effects are, however, in particular due to polysaccharides, including grifolan and grifolin, as well as to metal-bound proteins and lectins. In the extracts of the mushroom a unique polysaccharide compound - the D-fraction – has been identified, which is an especially active constituent.

Prof. Dr. Hiroaki Nanba (professor in the Department of Microbial Chemistry of Kobe Pharmaceutical University in Kobe, Japan. He has a Ph. D. in biochemistry and Immunology from Kyoto University, and is a member of the Japanese Cancer Society and the New York Academy of Science) has been researching Maitake intensely and treated many patients with it.

His answer to the question which diseases can be treated, cured or prevented with the help of Maitake is: "Maitake can not only prevent the development of cancer, but also be used in the treatment of cancer and other serious diseases, such as AIDS and hepatitis. Maitake stimulates the immune system and therefore it is also able to reduce several side-effects of chemotherapy. There exists an astonishing synergistic effect between chemo and Maitake. The mushroom is as effective in the treatment of high blood pressure and diabetes."

Its antiviral effects against the HIV (AIDS) have been confirmed by the US National Cancer Institute. Research studies – for example by the National Health Department of Japan - have shown that by using Maitake D-fraction the killing of helper-T cells by the HIV could be prevented up to 97% in vitro. According to this, one could assume that the development from HIV infection to AIDS could be either prevented completely or at least be slowed down considerably.

In a clinical trial with 165 patients at the age of 25-65 years with different advanced cancer diseases either a tumor regression or significant symptomatic improvements could be achieved with Maitake d-fraction in 73% of patients with breast cancer, 67% of patients with lung cancer and 47% of patients with liver cancer. In those cases in which Maitake extract was used in combination with chemotherapy the effects improved by 12%-28%. In cases of breast, prostate, lung and liver cancer significant effectiveness was evident; whereas in terms of bones and gastric cancer as well as of leukaemia the extracts were not that effective.
